Tractor demo

I’d talk to the dealer about it for starters pointing out it was a demo and he agreed that it was ok to collect the straw from a distance away . If things go pear shaped pay what you think it’s worth ie the correct hire charge and deduct the price of the extra diesel and left in it . He can’t chase you for an unpaid bill then .

I’d invoice him £600 for getting the load of straw back then you can chase him if he chases you.

Looking from the other side if it was your tractor and you got a phone call to say your tractors broken down 40 odd miles away you’d be a pee’d off . Several trips to repair and retrieve it or send a loader to collect it . Fair cost which ever way you look at it.
There needs to be some dialogue between the two sides before anything else I’d say.

If that was a concern why was the dealer sending out a tractor on demos that wasn’t reliable. This is the dealers issue not the guy that was thinking of buying it.

Our nextdoor neighbour had a 250hp tractor on demo for a week pulling a Topdown and drilling and i had two different makes of pick up, one for a week to do what I liked with it, and an other for a weekend only as it was fully booked for weeks ahead to treat as my own only asked for it to have a full tank of diesel on return. No point of a demo if you can't use it

Had a DC pickup a few years ago on demo. I insured it and had it for a 6 day long weekend to do two Uni trips for sprogs. Even insured No, 1 daughter, all with dealers agreement. I did not buy however, as it was too car like for my needs. Properr test drive. I was offered the same last year on another pickup.

Fortunes of the trade im afraid . The dealer should bite his tongue and maybe hope to make it up on the next deal
A demo is a demo and with a price tag of 35 grand attached to an 09 tractor why shouldnt the op put it through its paces ?? A leisurely road run.to collect a load of straw is hardly abusing the tractor . Maybe a hard day on a five furrow or a combi at full chat might have flushed out a few more weak points .
Id gently remind the dealer that no hire arrangment existed and tell him that you will have a deal again in the future .
The days of buying a pig in a poke are past im afraid and with repair bills coming in thousands these days if in doubt try it out . Any dealer who wont give out a used tractor for at least a week hasent much confidence in it and with most used tractors carrying only the bare legal warranty whats the problem ?? Better for it to calve when its still the dealers tractor rather than a week out of warranty and still a long way from the finish line with the finance !!!

If the tractor would not do an 80 mile trip without breaking down its best left alone,40 year old classic tractors often do 40 mile road runs.

It’s not the fact it broke down but it’s location. To be told your tractor broke down 40 miles away and left to sort it at your own cost . The customer could have had it delivered back to the dealers yard at his cost . When ever I hired/borrowed tractors/machinery I collected them from the dealers and took it back. In each post I’ve written on this thread I’ve suggested that the first thing to would be to talk about the situation the op finds himself in .
Edit- I’m sure if the dealer was able to look into the future and know that the tractor was going to brake down he wouldn’t have sent it out on demo .
