It was OK, cleared about half of my lots at their expected value, the rest went unsold with only 'low ball' bids ("Jesus loves a trier" and all that). At a traditional collective sale you'd maybe expect two thirds to sell, so it was a bit back from where it might have been. Then again buyers are less likely to take a punt on something they haven't actually seen with their own eyes, and I'm kinda surprised things sold so well with only two farmers taking the time to come and look at the items in the yard.

The only alternative this year is an I-bidder / Proxibid type online auction, where buyers have 10 days to 'up the ante', which has pushed prices way up beyond what you would see at a dispersal. Watching a couple of recent Cheffins sales and lots were reaching what what have been their expected values with 3 days to go and still being bid up 30 to 50% by people with itchy fingers. But it's the fairest way to find a market price, whereas my Trimble GPS had 8 close under bidders with no 2nd chance.

As a buyer I was successful on 1 of the 2 lots I tendered for, and I wasn't too fussed about the other one

Says who? It was viewing by appointment. The smart buyers viewed the lots in my yard, and knew what they were tendering for.

I aint driving to hereford
Its better to get one bargain with a lowball than ten items at top whack
