Mounted mower conditioner

So, it's looking like:
- a 2.4m mounted and a bigger tractor and linkage (which we're contemplating already for the hedge cutter), or
- a trailed and learn a new craft in the tight spaces.

With the mounted you'll have to mow with the bigger tractor and if it breaks down you can't mow. If you go trailed you can mow with the bigger tractor or the 390.

We faced a similar decision a few years ago before buying that Taarup 336. We have one tractor big enough for a 2.4m mounted and Dad wanted a mounted mower because it was all he had ever used, but being tied to mowing with 1 tractor and the trailed being easier to hook on swung the decision. Dad hasn't mown anything yet but he's topped a few fields with the trailed mower without issue and he'll be 70 this year.

I agree with what others have said, if it's workable for you, a trailed mower for a 390 would be alot kinder to it in the long run. As has been said an Tarrup. Or maybe a JD 1355 if you could find one.

If it has to be a mounted Mow Co, then I would go for a 2.4m just for the tractors sake. The cross shafts will thank you.
Have a 1355 bomb proof though 22 years old now .Still going but could do with wider tried a 3m mounted jd mcon it was way to heavy on 130 hp 4 cylinder .It was quicker mowing with trailed as didn't worry about turning .

We have both 328a & 1355, have plenty banks & small awkward fields, the trailed mower seems get used every time on 90hp+ mounted mower only get put on 6 cyl tractor when there's a lot to drop down.
I'd buy trailed every time if budget allows & I'd say better on damp ground conditions

View attachment 1156634Just seen this advertised on Facebook so thought I’d screenshot it and put on here. It’s a 390 linkage and no way would I want to put any size mower conditioner on it looks even lighter than I remember them to be
looking at this, I'd agree link arms and associated stuff needs to be stronger than this for sure. Best advice is a smaller trailed or, bite the bullet and buy a bigger tractor?

I opted for a mounted plain mower in the end. The accumulated logic was compelling! Bigger tractor on the way in any case but good to have a mower that is not unkind to either. Found a Kverneland CH2400 not too far away. 2.8m or bigger would have been ideal but there didn't seem to be much about (not least in my price band) and at least 2.4m is wider than the tractor!

Does the disc bed have oil in it or are the gears sintered and running without lubrication?

There will be oil in the bed, most likely something like 80-90 gear oil.

But please check this before you change it. As every manufacturer specs different and might have a good reason to.

Do you mean CM2400?
I think it’s always good practice to drop the oil on a new mower. You can learn a lot from what comes out. And I’d change it every year for same reasons.

Thanks a million.
Yep, I'll check and change the oil.
I guess I do mean CM2400.
The plate seems to have been mis-stamped.
