Add 15% soya and it will do ur jobYes but needs some protein added.
What you got to go with it ?Hi
Advice, Is my rolled barley any good for youngstock 8/10 months old calf’s ?View attachment 1078049
The OP barley is 10.5% protein, I like you always assume it’s around 10%. Cereals and a decent protein will always outperform the crap listed in a lot of compounds. Our mill and mix man, told us to count barley as 10% protein, and wheat as 11, and we wouldn't go far wrong.
wasn't to sure about that, but son's decision, just waiting for some analysis's to come back, from the mixes, to tell us exactly what we have got.
Wheat is rolled and fed to milkers, balanced with straight soya
Barley is mixed with a pellet to balance.
One thing we have found, for the milkers, we are getting some unusually high milk protein figures back, and protein pays particularly well, 7.5p per 1 %. lovely.
But, is it as simple as 2 quality products, produce the goods, whereas a 'mix' of cheap and dear products doesn't?

Yes & YesWill he need a min/vit supplement with the soya ? Could he get a "protein" pellet with these already in?
chuck a bag of suitable mineral, in the mix. Will he need a min/vit supplement with the soya ? Could he get a "protein" pellet with these already in?

Complete amateur here at straights analysis.
How do you get the 10.5% figure from if the analysis says 12.1?
Cake or blend protein on ticket is as fed, so use the same basis to compare barley etc12.1% of 86.88% Dry matter, so 12.1 X 86.88 = 1051 divide by 100 to get back to the percentage. = 10.5%
Protein definitely important for growth but doesn’t need to as high as feed companies generally recommend (they are salespeople after all).A company I use were recommending a 26 % protein ration to feed with straw for young cattle 20% is enough IMONext thing would be what growth you wanting ,
Are they going back out to grass , if so no point pushing to hard although a protein is important for growth
there's a lot of talk about protein levels in feed, milking cows some are saying 16%, or lower now, instead of 18/20%.Protein definitely important for growth but doesn’t need to as high as feed companies generally recommend (they are salespeople after all).A company I use were recommending a 26 % protein ration to feed with straw for young cattle 20% is enough IMO
^^^ completely agree. But there is only one aim with young calves, keep the beggars growing as fast as they can.
