can anyone recommend one for cutting silage bales ect that stays sharp for more than a day and doesn’t cost a small fortune Cheers

Heres a bit of a tip re the opined. The only down side is that the wooden handles get slippy when wet. Get some ice hockey / badminton racket grip tape and wrap the handle.

After a previous thread on here, I bought a folding lock knife that takes Stanley blades from an electrician’s website when I was ordering some cable & stuff. Iirc it was about £7, c/w 10 blades, and it is much better for bale wrap/net/string/fert bags. Not as useful as my old Buck knife for tha5 time when you want to poke or pierce something with a pointy end though.

You need 2 knifes
1. stanley blade that lives in the loader tractor for the bale wrap/net etc
2. General pocket knife for all the rest of your farm duties, skinning a rat, getting through gates etc.

I don't like them, the blades are too brittle and snap, and I think it has the wrong shape blade too, I find the lambs foot (or even pruning) shape far more useful.

Yes, Opinel. Best knife I've had for keeping its edge. Not particularly snug in a pocket, due to it's round shape, but well worth persevering with it because of how sharp the blade is.

I once lashed out £35 for a Buck knife from a stall at Builth. Mrs NeilO reminded me of my frivolous spending for several years after.

Best knife iv ever owned. Must have it at least 4 years now whereas most other knifes iv owned have fell in bits or bent over when cuttin bales nipping my hand long before 4 years old

Another vote for Opinel, I use several (no, not all at the same time 
) and they're 'cheap' enough that you won't buckets if you lose or break one. Great for taking an edge. The trucks and tractors (should) all have one + I always carry one. If 'out' I'll take a no6 non locking which is a bit small but legal-carry
I've got other knives, Bucks, Kershaws and some Trevor Ablett knives made in the years shortly before he died. But the Opinels I reckon give good bang for your bucks even if they do wear a hole in your jeans
