interested to read this thread, used to sell a lot of 9/10 month hf bulls up 'north', and the feedback was good, fairly plain, and was told they started growing from day 1.

We are keeping our own calves, and a few bought in, dairy cross. We have had them on home mix all summer, oldest 1 yr down to 6 months. Another 80 calves will be born, in the next 10/12 weeks. Not worried about rearing calves, sorted that out.

Coming into the sheds now, and are thinking a TMR mix, or trough and silage, plenty of maize, grass silage, hay and straw, with our own grain. You lads know a damn sight more than l do, what would be the better of the 2. Cattle are mainly hfrdx or AAx.

It's a different game now, to what l used to do, with the hf bull calves, that was 15 yrs ago.
So feeling our way, back in, and any advice is listened to !

Do many people finish cattle in the 100 day system. When do you decide the cattle are ready to finish do the big cattle finisher’s buy an animal at a set weight approximately then sell 100 days later. I appreciate there is many variables.
I dont understand how this pays really want heifers gone after 60-70 days or less, better to feed 10 kgs a day than 5kgs for 2/3 longer . straw labour machinery vet and interest all add up to more over more time . I cant see why people feed grass silage and hay to finishers just slows the job makes them lie wet and more gutty . lim /blonde /blue to slow and expensive for me unless crossed with a native type .
Big weights = big costs and less cattle turned over

I have 480 -550kg mix of Hereford Angus blues & Simmentals. Dairy cross. What would you recommend feeding these? I Have plenty of maize, grass silage and barley available.
