Hoping to rent some land of a neighbour, currently in poor grass that was last cut in 2019 (bales still in the field). Wet medium to clay land, trio, plough or contract Mzuri available. Ideally get it into first wheat in the autumn, we grow maize, cereals and beans on the farm, lots of muck available. How should I attack it?

I’d go beans first.

And how would you get there? The grass is currently 3' tall? Flail off? Sheep might work but we have none and there are tracks from dog walkers all over.
The dog Walker bit would but me off for a start . How many years in grass, as no seed dressings o the maize now for wireworm might be a problem .

At least five years grass. I doubt anyone would put sheep in there and I want nowt to do with the woolly bundles of death myself.

i had some i planted crops in after 15 years setaside
took 3 years to get over the wireworm
another field 10 years graced/silage grass leathrjackets took the first winter wheat crop
both fields now in the running as the best fields on the farm

Sounds like it it has started on its journey of rewilding... now, apparently you can leave it as it is and find a scheme that will have some other business pay you to keep it on that journey in order to offset their emissions and give them a warm fuzzy saving the planet feeling :ROFLMAO:
if it is classed as permenant pasture the payments are very low in stewardship compared to arable cropped land

It’s quite ironic that this will be the sort of ground that will get paid to be left alone or have trees planted on it .
I wouldn’t want to be paying much rent for it.
