Puma 140 to small for 16/18t trailers?

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a tractor to mostly pull 16/18t potato and onion trailers with the odd load of maize too hopefully. Budget is very tight (close to £25,000 as poss) and I had been aiming for the likes of a 69/7530 Deere for simplicity and resale value, but I've seen a couple of older style 140 pumas with much lower hours and price than the Deere's. Not to worried about power as a remap should solve that but I am worried if there's enough bulk behind them to control a big trailer. An Internet search suggests the case actually weighs more than a 6930 but I thought they looked smaller! Any one got any first hand experience on that or what to look at in a used case? Many thanks!

A 69 or 75 in that budget will have done a heap of hours. Is that the pumas at robson? They look like a shout. Been looking for a while to fit a certain niche and laugh if you may but you’d get a 200hp McCormick in your budget if not under it will 5000hrs.

Is a 140 a 6cylinder? I always remember carting off with a 6420s and 18t trailer. It was dangerous, used to push tractor round at junctions and almost stopped going up steep hills

On the road it will be fine plenty power, maybe not that fast up hills but that’s what gears are for.
steep fields and soft ground mite make for slow progress though.

That's the trouble, but at least the 30 series are known to do higher hours with a bit of love. I'm unsure about reliability of some other brands at 8/9000 hrs. I'm not a particularly huge John Deere fan but their known faults (egr/turbo/head gasket) I can fix myself without too much hassle. Yes it was that one I was thinking about, have seen another 1 or 2 about as well. Whats the reliability like on a McCormick? Thanks!

140hp will be fine, I’d want a 6cyl though (not sure on Case models) won’t be the quickest but will be fine.

I’d be more worried about the tractor having enough oil to tip the trailer up, as our 125hp JD is fine on a 16t apart from will only tip it half way.

A 140 puma is a 6pot. Its either the same as a t6050 or t6070 nh range command. Cant just remember which 1 tho

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
