Which tub mixer

Its not quite so much the mixing-as-you-fill-it power requirement - its the re starting a full tub between groups at low engine rpm, where the 150hp tractor is not making 150hp, plus the considerable hydraulic demand if you've got the conveyor going as well.

I have an 11cu Shelbourne and at 1200rpm the 7740 known as a pretty torquey motor, seriously struggles to restart it.
Perhaps the reason a lot of tubs have wide angle pto , so the tractor can keep the mix moving.

That’s a fair dollop of power, my 20 cube Keenan would need 260 hp, thought I was overpowered with 130 to 160!
I’m just greedy,120hp runs my current feeder, twice as fast with 300hp on the front.

Wide angle pto,I fill the feeder in 1000speed economy pto and don’t stop it till it’s empty, being in economy pto I can spin the pto at 1200 rpm to fully empty the tub.

I agree chopping bales in a wagon is a cost I try & avoid but a twin auger compared to a single is a game changer when/if you do have to do. There’s no comparison in the speed of it
We were on a single, I remember putting 3 bales in it, walking off for half an hour and coming back and the 3rd one still sitting up on the top so to speak. Can imagine the action of two rotors being significantly more efficient. Most of the bales we make we feed in the field but any that may get fed to milkers we get the knives dropped in the baler.

Do you not end up with horrendously over mixed silage? Always seemed easy to over mix when I used a tub but could just have been the diet I was feeding

No,I tip last bucket in and drive straight to the feed passage and feed it out, with a smaller tractor I’d be waiting on it mixing.

Unless I’m chopping something the mixer stays off until I put the sheargrab on for the last ingredient which is grass silage. Then the tractor runs around 1000-1100 in 540 eco. In the 300’s rpm at the pto. By the time I’m parked up & got back in the tractor its mixed.

Not wanting to hijack the thread  but I'm selling a siloking twin auger 14 cube, with 2ft extension on the top, year 2013 with front conveyor and rear middle door. Was in daily use until last week. Augers are decent about half worn. Been completely faultless and only selling because I've gone for a bigger one.

I was going to ask, what size of tractors are people using for a 24 cube? I have a 14 cube SiloKing and it is a hard drive, I run it on a Ford 8210 (which should be round that 100) and the tractor is running hard. So much so I have done the head gasket and scored the cylinders (I know age is coming into play also).

sounds like you should run it in low box? I have a 12 cube silo king and run it on 105hp in high box but previously it was on 75hp. In high box it’s ok if you don’t have to stop and start but in low box it restarts easily
