reserves won’t boil my kettle today

this is going to be an immediate problem

small nuclear is the fastest solution- Rolls-royce make turn key plants that apparently can be live in about 6 months, use proven nuclear sub tech and can power a average town
That is simply not the case.

In principle, small submarine-scale reactors could be used for civilian purposes, but there are a lot of technical and regulatory hurdles to cross before they become a reality. Royces have never built a civilian small modular reactor, nor has the office of nuclear regulation ever licenced one for use.

The ONR has only just started the generic design assessment. This will take just as long for small reactors as it did for conventional sized reactors, if not longer due to the novelty of the concept.

For context, I was working on the design of the next generation of submarine reactors in 2012/13. That reactor design still hasn't been built.

Not just a pretty face are you? 😉

Maybe those half completed renewables projects which had to be abandoned when Amber Rudd came back from COP 21 in Paris in January 2015 because the agreed 10% per 6 months regression in FIT was accelerated with the same effect as total withdrawal will become viable once again.
Some have had planning approval and physical grid connections in place and paid for for over 7 years …..But a cast iron commitment to cover the future costs by some means would be essential.

To get back on topic, does anyone know exactly how much commodity/food is available worldwide, particularly from the Southern hemisphere? There are a few threads on the Forum now, about how this is going to pan out,all with the view that food will be short. How much extra wheat/maize/soya is available from the USA,Canada, Argentina,Brazil,Australia to make up the shortfall from Ukraine/Russia? Likewise Beef,Pork,Poultry? Presumably the Government has the Stats and done the sums.It is more than likely Eustace and Co will have the view like Margaret Beckett had, saying "The World is awash with food"..........................................Just what Goldsmiths,Dimbleby,Carrie Antoinette etc want to hear.............................................Job done for them..................Just carry on planting trees, with the added advantage of no nasty fertilisers and chemicals spread on the land.

I'm sure it out if date, but I've previously heard the stat "there's enough food produced globally to feed every human 3000 calories a day".

Probably true. Whether that would be a balanced nutritious diet is another thing entirely....

Calories we are NOT generally short of these days (with the exception of some war zones).

Nutrition we ARE.

i have a decent contact at Rolls - given what has happened to them thanks to covid they increasingly see small scale nuclear as the potential saviour of the company

if other power source are cut i think we maybe amazed at what can get past regulation very quickly

re opening coal mines / fracking or more renewables is not fast either or without regulator challenge

Yep. Kill the Red Tape, and things can happen quickly. Power cuts will focus Govt minds wonderfully.

Covid showed that quick decisions can be made if they have to, albeit not all successfully.

The Country has been run down for years and pander to much to the Activists, and reliance on China etc etc.
Great Britain was World leading with all industries and produce, and British Empire.
We have been to quoin a phrase " caught with our pants down", when times are hard and this Country is in need we WILL BE KNACKERED.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
